Independent Project

Topic: Appearance Anxiety

The origin of this project is because I am very resistant to the camera and want to escape from the camera. I would become very stiff and unable to smile freely. The lens is like eyes, able to capture my ugliness and timidity.

I went to the Internet to read the experiences of many people with camera fear, and found that they are basically because of lack of confidence in themselves. To overcome this fear, you must first build self-confidence.

Researches:

Camera shyness is the desire to avoid being photographed or filmedIt is common for individuals who are camera-shy to fear public speakingperforming in front of an audienceand having one’s picture taken by any type of camera or by video camera.

At the beginning, I wanted to explore camera shyness as the theme and drew a series of sketches to sup- port my idea. For example, breaking free from a photo frame. But when I brainstorm, I feel that my core content is appearance anxiety. So I changed my mind.

draft (I want to show people’s inner panic and unease outside of being filmed)
Sketch (I want to paint a picture in the photo album that I am not satisfied with my face and therefore have it painted out.)
Draft (This is to demonstrate people’s desire to escape mobile phone photography.)

I went to the embossing workshop. It was a very interesting experience. I realized that embossing and debossing are separate. Sculpting requires more strength than I imagined, and the production method is also very complicated. Below are some of my shots, I think I can try to print some patterns in my works.

This is my final six illustrations.I think the majority of my audience will be women, so I have done a lot of draw- ing of female avatars. Be- cause in this society, women’s appearance anxiety far exceeds that of men. There are many reasons, such as Social beauty standards, Objectification and serialization, Social comparison and Cultural and historical factors. I want to try creating a dynamic feel for every girl with a novel and fashionable style. When I am painting, I also feel very enjoyable and strive to show everyone’s confidence into my drawing. I hope my ideas can break through the screen and make the audience feel it.

I conducted a mock up of the booklet. I think it’s possible to include such manuals on campus and in the psychology room. Because I believe that there are relatively more people who are anxious about their appearance during adolescence, in order to make more people aware of the importance of confidence, I believe it can be promoted through manuals. I hope this approach can reduce some people’s anxiety about appearance.

Communication

These suggestions made me realize my shortcomings, such as time management issues and thematic connections. I should strength- en my exercise in this area so that I can solve my weaknesses in the future. But in a certain way, I also gained recognition, which gave me confidence and the motivation to continue designing. I am very grateful for the strengths and weaknesses that the person who provided me with the comments made me aware of.

Reflection

I think my biggest weakness is my lack of sensitivity to art, and I think this is something I should strengthen.

This is a question I saw online, but in fact, everyone is like this. We all like to see what we want to see, while ignoring what we don’t like to see. Everyone hopes to receive recognition from others, but they forget that the most important thing is themselves.

In life, we should discover beauty more, experience beauty more, and think more about what we really need? We need to learn to discover beauty.

I think we should return to ourselves, communicate more with family and teachers. Only in this way can one achieve better de- velopment.
