We made a pechakucha to introduce everyone. I got to know a lot of different styles of works and everyone’s painting habits. I also spoke about my ambitions as an artist. But I’m not good at speaking, and I didn’t grasp the time on each page. But I feel that this time I have developed my speaking skills.Friday brife

We painted postcards for three hours straight. Painting on location is a bit difficult for me because it’s hard to think of something to paint all at once. But this is a good exercise for my painting ability. I came up with a lot of ideas for projects that will be helpful in my future process. I deeply feel my own shortcomings by looking at other people’s work. I am deeply inspired by how creative they are.
Donna Wilson DesignsDonna Wilson Blanket
Through on-site inspections and online products, I was deeply inspired to create some of my own. I started by painting a black cat blanket using my own cat as inspiration. Then I saw information about the blue-ringed octopus on the Internet and I was very interested in it, so I made a design for it. Regarding the sheep blanket I thought it had something to do with sleep so I referenced their color palette.
Based on the blanket, I limited myself to spending an hour with one design. The first thing I drew was a design of ducks swimming in a pool. I referred to the performance of water patterns in pool with two figures.I first found some references online and brainstormed a sketch. I love drawing animals so I wanted to draw a blanket with a squirrel theme. It tells the story of a group of squirrels searching for pine cones for the winter.layout of blanketI finally chose these four colors to represent the arrival of autumn. The composition was originally square, but after the tutor’s suggestion, I thought it would become a rectangle, so I lengthened the canvas. I used mock-up to show the ideal material. It was also close to Halloween, so I painted a scene about my black cat and pumpkin. I think it makes sense to me and the composition is interesting. But during one-on-one coaching, it was said that the blanket should be based on a more irregular pattern, so the idea was abandoned. So I reconsidered the composition of my design so that it could see the appropriate content from all aspects and came up with the draft on the right. This is the final design of Pumpkin Cat. I used these four colors to represent the autumn pumpkin harvest and the arrival of Halloween. During one-to-one tutoring, the tutor said that he hoped the cat would appear more rounded and well-shaped. So I modified the lines a bit like making the body rounder and letting the tail show. I hope customers will want to buy this blanket after seeing it.After watching the peers’ showcase, I thought I should give myself a push because I found that they had already made a lot of samples and participated in a lot of workshops. Their designs are very novel, some are made of wool felt, and some are screen printed. So I quickly made an appointment for LCC’s workshop and purchased some materials. In the studio lab, we were asked to collage a visual presentation using existing items. This helps me express my thoughts and stories through pictures. I printed out my cats and collaged them with my own designs. In the process of giving to different peers, I got a lot of appreciation and suggestions for the combination arrangement of cats and pumpkins and the shape of squirrels.some sketchesIn Friday’s studio lab, I visited some other people’s works and learned different printing methods. This kind of printing effect made me want to print my own works, so I first used riso for one of my designs. But since the printing effect is not ideal, I will try screen printing. We went on Donna Wilson’s research trip. I saw a lot of interesting dolls inside, and even though I had seen pictures on the Internet, I found them even cuter and more vivid after seeing them in real life. I think this is the charm of handmade craftsmanship. In addition, I was honored to hear the designer describe his own experience, such as his university study career and his original intention of design. And learned how to make a blanket just like theirs. After completing the first design, I participated in a studio lab that saw many other artists’ understanding of the narrative of their works. So I reorganized the brief and did a brainstorm that exemplified the important content. I rethought the composition of my cats and ducks: how to make them more interesting and meaningful.I printed four layers in four different colors, learning how to clean, create a screen base, and mix the desired colors. I discovered that when working on fabric, both the base and pigments required specific materials. After several experiments, I successfully created vibrant and well-defined pieces.
I participated in LCC’s screen print workshop to print my second design. I enjoyed the printing process because it was exciting to watch each color come out successfully. There were some issues with mixing the colors that forced me to reprint. But fortunately, I am very satisfied with the final result. This is the final outcome. I am very satisfied with this printing even though this is my first time using fabric print. The steps for paper and textile are similar, but there are some differences. For example, the base plate and paint used need to choose specific materials. After printing it, I felt that the pattern and material of this design were more suitable for use as a blanket, so I made it the final product.
In the final showcase, I presented my printed design sketchbook and some design ideas. I got a lot of interesting ideas from listening to people from the company commenting on the work of well-designed people. I think I should communicate more with peers and tutors instead of doing my own thing. It’s easy for me to get so caught up in my own work that I forget to see it through other people’s eyes.I also made a window display about squirrels. I think they are designed to make passersby stop and look. Although I was not selected by the company this time, I learned a lot of experience and knowledge that I did not have before, which gave me useful experience.
