Minor Studio Project

Brife

We painted postcards for three hours straight. Painting on location is a bit difficult for me because it’s hard to think of something to paint all at once. But this is a good exercise for my painting ability. I came up with a lot of ideas for projects that will be helpful in my future process. I deeply feel my own shortcomings by looking at other people’s work. I am deeply inspired by how creative they are.

Through on-site inspections and online products, I was deeply inspired to create some of my own. I started by painting a black cat blanket using my own cat as inspiration. Then I saw information about the blue-ringed octopus on the Internet and I was very interested in it, so I made a design for it. Regarding the sheep blanket I thought it had something to do with sleep so I referenced their color palette.

Based on the blanket, I limited myself to spending an hour with one design. The first thing I drew was a design of ducks swimming in a pool. I referred to the performance of water patterns in pool with two figures.
I first found some references online and brainstormed a sketch. I love drawing animals so I wanted to draw a blanket with a squirrel theme. It tells the story of a group of squirrels searching for pine cones for the winter.
I finally chose these four colors to represent the arrival of autumn. The composition was originally square, but after the tutor’s suggestion, I thought it would become a rectangle, so I lengthened the canvas. I used mock-up to show the ideal material.
It was also close to Halloween, so I painted a scene about my black cat and pumpkin. I think it makes sense to me and the composition is interesting. But during one-on-one coaching, it was said that the blanket should be based on a more irregular pattern, so the idea was abandoned. So I reconsidered the composition of my design so that it could see the appropriate content from all aspects and came up with the draft on the right.
In the studio lab, we were asked to collage a visual presentation using existing items. This helps me express my thoughts and stories through pictures. I printed out my cats and collaged them with my own designs. In the process of giving to different peers, I got a lot of appreciation and suggestions for the combination arrangement of cats and pumpkins and the shape of squirrels.
In the final showcase, I presented my printed design sketchbook and some design ideas. I got a lot of interesting ideas from listening to people from the company commenting on the work of well-designed people. I think I should communicate more with peers and tutors instead of doing my own thing. It’s easy for me to get so caught up in my own work that I forget to see it through other people’s eyes.

I also made a window display about squirrels. I think they are designed to make passersby stop and look. Although I was not selected by the company this time, I learned a lot of experience and knowledge that I did not have before, which gave me useful experience.
